College Days Off Are Food for Thought
So the administrators of Santa Monica College are being forced to take one day off each week to Think Great Thoughts (“College Allows Days Off for Officials to Think, Write, Create,” Part B, Jan. 3).
I have often wondered what college administrators do in their workday, and now it seems that Santa Monica College wonders also--it seems as if they have admitted that they have at least 20% more administrators than they have work for. Talk about featherbedding!
Why only one day off each week with pay? Two days off each would double the benefits: twice the reduction in smog and twice the time to Think Great Thoughts! Robert Silverman, administrative dean of educational development, admitted that he has occasionally in the past taken some time off because he “thought much more clearly at the beach.”
Administrators are paid to think about the problems of their workplace. They should solve the problems of the world and Think Great Thoughts on their own time. This disregard for the taxpayers’ money is unconscionable! It must not be tolerated.
