A small amount of the chemical that killed 3,500 people in India in 1984 leaked from a pesticide plant and seven workers were injured, the plant manager said Monday.

The methyl isocyanate leak at the former Union Carbide plant here occurred Friday, but was not confirmed until Monday, manager Ron Bearer said.

About an ounce of the chemical escaped as workers were doing routine maintenance chores at Rhone-Poulenc, which purchased Union Carbide’s agricultural products division in 1986, Bearer said.
