It’s No Mirage: Golden Nugget Inc. said its lavish Mirage casino hotel in Las Vegas, which opened in November amid great fanfare, won more than $40 million in December, its first full month of operation. In a statement designed to dispel doubts about the Mirage’s financial viability, Golden Nugget said the Mirage’s December winnings, as well its non-casino revenue of $18.5 million, “exceeded any known results in the history of legalized gambling by a significant amount.” Golden Nugget also noted, though, that the Mirage was so expensive to open that the firm lost $21.2 million in 1989, nearly three times what it lost in 1988.
