U.S. postal inspectors are probing the disappearance of about $64,000 that was being transported between San Fernando Valley post offices on two occasions last month, authorities said Tuesday.

The funds, received for stamp sales and other postal services, were reported missing from the Jan. 20 and Jan. 31 delivery runs from the Canoga Park and Chatsworth stations to the division headquarters in Van Nuys, officials said.

Postal Inspector Donald Obritsch said it was not known whether the money was stolen or lost.

He declined to discuss the amount of the loss, but John Collatos, president of the American Postal Workers Union’s San Fernando Valley local, said he had been informed that about $64,000 is missing.
