NAMES IN THE NEWS : Skelton Quips for Art Fraud Jury
Comedian Red Skelton was called as a prosecution witness in an art fraud trial, but he had kind words for the defendants--and one-liners for jurors.
Skelton testified that he was satisfied with Center Art Gallery’s marketing of reproductions of his works.
The gallery and owner William Mett and director Marvin Wiseman are charged with 104 counts of mail and wire fraud. They are accused of misrepresenting the involvement of surrealist Salvador Dali and celebrity artists Tony Curtis, Anthony Quinn and Skelton in reproductions.
On the witness stand Tuesday, Skelton gave his age as 77. “I would have been 78, but we spent a year on Maui,” he said.
