STANTON : Decision Postponed on Antenna’s Fate
Under pressure from renters at the Katella Estates Mobile Home Park, the city’s Planning Commission has postponed a decision on whether to allow the installation of a cellular phone antenna nearby.
Pacific Telesis Co. wants to install a 63-foot transmitter on Central Avenue, about 12 feet away from the mobile home park. Residents have agreed to meet with Pac Tel officials later this month to discuss what residents fear are the hazards of living next to the transmitter.
The city is also considering a second request by LA Cellular Co. to build a similar antenna on commercial property farther from Katella Estates. Both applications will be on the commission’s March 7 agenda.
About 120 park residents signed a petition to try to block Pac Tel’s plans in January and presented it to the Planning Commission, forcing it to delay approval of the antenna.
Mike Bouvier, city planning commissioner, said the research he has read on transmitters of this type, which emit the same type of waves as FM radio and television transmitters, is inconclusive.
“It will be up to the commission to decide on this,” he said.
