Council Names Park After Volunteer

The city held a contest to decide whose name should grace a new park, but the City Council this week voted to throw out the winning entry and name the park after somebody else.

The winning name in last November’s contest was Country Trails Park. But the council decided to name the park after Lucia Kust, a former Girl Scout Leader and YMCA volunteer who worked with the city’s children until her death in 1976.

Kust created a YMCA program in which children were taught to swim in back-yard pools, and she also was a volunteer for the Yorba Linda District Library.

Council members said they named the park after Kust at the request of several community leaders. At the City Council meeting, five residents spoke in favor of naming the park after Kust.

Councilman Roland E. Bigonger said public opinion in favor of the Kust proposal was so high he “might get drummed out of office” if he did not vote in favor of it.

The park is near Fairmont Boulevard in the Eastlake Village area.
