The avocado was introduced to California growers after 1907 by Frederick O. Popenoe, owner of an Altadena nursery called West India Gardens. Popenoe selected specimen avocado trees from Atlixco, Mexico, to plant in his nursery. Today’s varieties, including the popular Fuerte, can be traced back to strains cultivated in Altadena.
