Problems of Highway Chases From Border Patrol Checkpoint

Share

I read with interest your editorial “Reducing Deaths at the Border.” (Feb. 5) While the issue of pursuits is extremely serious, I must take you to task on your use of the word “border.”

I would like to know why it is legal to stop anyone who chooses to drive on I-5 going northbound between Oceanside and San Clemente. The last time I checked, the “border” was somewhere about 90 miles south of the current “border” at San Onofre.

Rather than propose we spend “$10 million to make a more secure checkpoint in north San Diego County (under the guise of reducing chase-related deaths), why not eliminate it altogether and free up a very busy stretch of freeway. Stop the chases and bring basic human rights back to those who are fortunate enough to have them.
