Another Losing Season For Gulls

With a 110-109 loss at Southern Utah State Monday night, the U.S. International men’s basketball recorded its ninth consecutive losing season, and its 10th in the 11 years since it has been a Division I program.

The Gulls, led by Kevin Bradshaw’s 34 points, trailed by 11 at the half. Also for USIU, Demetrius Laffitte scored 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds.

USIU (9-15) defeated Southern Utah Jan. 27, 109-97, but the Thunderbirds (11-12) have now won three of four.

USIU has a 3-101 record in road games over the past eight seasons.

BASEBALL

Point Loma Nazarene picked up its first victory of the season by handing the visiting Spanish Olympic team a 7-4 loss. PLNC catcher Dave Swearingin scored twice, and was one for three with a double. The Crusaders (1-2-1) had a five-run fifth inning.

Visiting UC Riverside outhit UC San Diego, 16-2, and defeated the Tritons, 11-1 in a nonconference game. Ruben Ayala went three for four, with two RBI’s and scored twice for UCR (7-4). UCSD’s Dann Eaton pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for UCSD (1-2), giving him 9 2/3 scoreless innings in the past two games.

MEN’S TENNIS

The Aztec’s Ricardo Herrera recorded two victories as SDSU defeated visiting Brigham Young University, 8-1, in a Western Athletic Conference match.

No. 1 Herrera defeated John Mattice, 7-6, 6-3, while No. 2 Tole Marinkovic handily beat George Chingas 6-3, 6-4. Herrera and Marinkovic teamed to defeat Mattice and Gabe Pate, 6-4, 6-2. SDSU improved to 5-1. The Cougars fell to 3-2.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Taking two of three doubles matches allowed 16-ranked USD to squeak by host USIU, 5-4. Each team won three matches in singles, but victories by the Toreras No. 2 doubles Paula Hansen-Tonya Fuller and No. 3 Christy Drage-Laura Mannisto proved the difference.

Fuller and USIU’s Giovanna Carotenuto were the only players winning twice. Fuller defeated Carol Curmi in No. 3 singles, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2. Carotenuto defeated Aby Brayton, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, in No. 1 singles, and teamed with Diane Lowings for a victory in No. 1 doubles. USD improved to 3-1. USIU is 5-5.

WOMEN’S GOLF

San Diego State’s Joann Walker is alone in third after the first round of the Arizona Invitational in Tucson. Walker’s one-under-par 71 on the 6,280-yard course at Randolph Park put her one stroke behind UCLA’s Jean Zedlitz and Dina Ammaccapane of San Jose State, who are tied at 70. UCLA’s Elizabeth Bowman (72) and Christy Erb (75), both of Bonita, are tied for fourth and 16th. SDSU’s Jennifer Hold and USIU’s Tracy Marble are also tied at 16th. El Cajon’s Lynn Mikuias shot a 74, putting her tied at 10th.
