ON THE SIDELINES : McEnroe Play OKd After Apology
John McEnroe will play in the Queen’s Club tennis tournament for the first time since he insulted the club chairman’s wife in 1984, tournament officials said.
Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Tim Mayotte will also participate in the June 11-17 grass court tournament, a tune-up for Wimbledon.
McEnroe, who has won the Queen’s Club title four times, was banned from the club and stripped of his honorary membership after cursing at Sheila Boden, whose husband was club chairman at the time.
McEnroe argued with Boden after she denied him practice time on a court that was reserved for a mixed doubles match.
Current Queen’s Club Chairman Grant Meyrick said that McEnroe is being allowed to play because he apologized for the incident but that honorary membership is still being withheld.
