COSTA MESA : Reservoir Opposed at Kaiser School Site

Share

More than 150 people turned out to voice their concerns to the Newport Mesa Unified School District about an underground reservoir planned for the site of Kaiser Elementary School.

Nearly everyone who addressed the district board suggested that the now-vacant Lindburgh Elementary School site would be a better place for the 25-million-gallon reservoir.

Lindburgh was originally mentioned as a possible location for the reservoir, but the school board rejected that idea because the future of that site has not been decided. Kaiser is the only other site that the school district has to offer.

Tuesday night, officials of the Mesa Consolidated Water District formally asked for approval of a lease of the Kaiser school site for the reservoir. The officials told those attending the meeting that the water district would ensure the safety of the schoolchildren and local residents during construction.

The school board hasn’t announced when it will vote on the request, saying the purpose of Tuesday’s meeting was to hear a presentation from the water district.
