Spike Lee Tops Critics’ Poll: Spike Lee, who was overlooked for an Oscar nomination for his direction of “Do the Right Thing,” was the overwhelming choice of 80 film critics polled for the April issue of American Film magazine. Lee was named the year’s best director by 29 of the critics and “Do the Right Thing” was picked as the year’s best picture by 24. Paul Mazursky, also left off the Oscar ballot, was the critics’ second choice as best director for “Enemies, a Love Story.” The second choice of the critics for best picture was “Drugstore Cowboy.” Neither “Do the Right Thing” nor “Drugstore Cowboy” made the final five with the Oscar voters.
