Builder of the Year: Peter M. Ochs, chairman, chief executive and founder of the Fieldstone Co., has been named 1989 Builder of the Year by Professional Builder magazine.

The award was bestowed at the recent National Home Builders Assn. convention in Atlanta, and follows Ochs’ selection last March as 1989 California Builder of the Year by California Builder magazine.

The national award cited Ochs for a commitment to quality in his residential projects, for community betterment efforts through professional, cultural and charitable activities, and for his business success.

Ochs, who comes from a long line of builders, started Fieldstone in 1981 after nine years with the William Lyon Co., the last six as its president.

Since then, Fieldstone has sold more than 7,700 new homes in Southern California.

The Building Industry Assn. of Orange County runs a special program, called HomeAid, in which builders in various regions of the county band together to build new shelters for the homeless or to rehabilitate existing shelter facilities.

When the five projects of the 1989 program are completed later this year, more than 300 builders, subcontractors and suppliers will have donated $500,000 worth of labor and materials, BIA officials say.
