A Long Beach firm and its general manager were ordered to pay a total of $161,000 in fines and penalties Friday for illegally hauling hazardous waste.
Newhall Municipal Judge H. Keith Byrum said he was imposing the steep penalty against Clean Fuels Inc. to “send a message to others,” according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Anthony Patchett.
During an inspection stop at the California Highway Patrol checkpoint in Castaic on Sept. 27, 1988, officers found five drums containing 200 gallons of hazardous waste diesel fuel on a truck owned by the firm.
The firm and its general manager, Kent Brian Cook, were convicted in December of illegal transportation of hazardous wastes and charges of failing to provide a driver with a manifest while carrying hazardous waste and failing to have a manifest in the vehicle while carrying hazardous waste.
