A San Fernando man was sentenced Wednesday to 19 years in prison and an additional consecutive term of 17 years to life in prison for a drive-by gang shooting that killed a 16-year-old boy and injured two other boys.
Van Nuys Superior Court Judge Raymond T. Mireles sentenced Felipe Madrigal, 19, to 19 years for the attempted second-degree murder of the two youths and to 17 years to life for the second-degree murder of Robert Sanchez.
A jury convicted Madrigal on Jan. 30, after three days of deliberations, for shooting Sanchez to death with an M-1 carbine rifle last March 18 at Sherman Way and Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys.
A vehicle driven by Madrigal cut off a car in which Sanchez was a passenger, prosecutors said, and Madrigal and Sanchez exchanged gang insults. Madrigal then pulled out the rifle and began firing into the car, wounding two of its five occupants and killing Sanchez.
A passenger in Madrigal’s car, Marvin Rodriguez, 20, of Panorama City, pleaded guilty on Jan. 11 to attempted second-degree murder and was sentenced last week to five years in prison.
