IRVINE : UCI Races to Benefit Childrens’ Group

A morning of racing events at UC Irvine on Sunday will raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County.

The first annual UCI Anteaters Make-A-Wish Race Day Event will include a 5-K run, a 10-K wheelchair race, a 3-K walk and two cycling races that will feature professional and collegiate cyclists.

The day will also include a local business product fair and a cycling safety program. Proceeds from the day will go to the local Make-A-Wish organization, a Newport Beach-based nonprofit group that works toward granting the wishes of children who have terminal or life-threatening illnesses.

The day begins with registration for the 5-K run at 6:30 a.m. Participants must have collected at least $50 in pledges to participate. The 10-K wheelchair race will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the 3-K walk following at 9:15. Participants in the 3-K walk must have collected $25 worth of pledges to take part.

The Celebrity Cycling Race will begin at 10 a.m. and the Collegiate Cycling Races will follow at 11.

All races will begin at the university’s physical science parking lot.

The UCI cycling team and radio station KUCI will also benefit from money raised during the day.
