Top-seeded John McEnroe joined second-seeded Brad Gilbert on the sidelines Wednesday night after being upset by Richey Reneberg on the third day of the $1-million U.S. Pro Indoor tennis tournament in Philadelphia.

Reneberg broke McEnroe’s service three times in the third set to win, 6-7 (7-5), 6-3, 6-3.

Paul Haarhuis won 12 of the last 15 points to beat Gilbert, 7-6 (10-8), 5-7, 6-4.

Gilbert, ranked fifth in the world, said his match went downhill after he lost two set points while ahead 5-4 in the first set.

“I had a double set point on my serve and just played a really awful game from there,” he said.

In the first-set tiebreaker, after protesting two calls, Gilbert yelled, “Shut up!” at the taunting crowd.

Boris Becker, in a rare temper outburst, barely escaped being disqualified before advancing to the second round of the $1-million ATP tournament in Stuttgart, West Germany.

Becker came within one code of conduct violation of being defaulted, but managed a 7-6, 6-4 first-round victory over Brod Dyke of Australia.

The West German was furious with Australian umpire Richard Ings for issuing a warning for ball abuse after the fifth game of the first set.

Sixth-seeded Laura Gildemeister of Peru lost to Australian Nicole Provis, 6-3, 6-3, but the other seeded players advanced in the Virginia Slims of Washington.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova routed Ann Grossman, 6-0, 6-0, in a match that took only 49 minutes. Grossman won only 25 points.
