The school board will decide at Wednesday’s meeting the future of the former Carlsbad High School teacher’s aide previously accused of selling steroids to three students.

The eight charges against Gregory Tirona of selling a controlled substance were dismissed Tuesday after a jury hung 11-1 in favor of acquittal. Tirona has said he wants to return to the school, where he taught a class for suspended students.

School board member Ed Switzer said the board may choose either to retain Tirona or refer him to the school’s personnel commission for a termination hearing.

“As a board member I think I have a strong obligation to protect kids, but by the same token, I don’t want to falsely accuse an employee,” Switzer said.
