In an effort to create more short-term parking, especially in downtown San Diego, the City Council has authorized the establishment of green curbside zones for non-commercial vehicles.

The zones, which will accommodate one or two vehicles for up to 20 minutes at a time, will be the first quick turnover parking areas in San Diego. Passenger loading zones, with white curbs, and commercial loading zones, with yellow curbs, are already in place, but neither allow non-commercial vehicle parking of more than a few moments.

Councilman Bob Filner, who requested the green zones, said he felt they would meet a growing need as San Diego’s downtown continues to develop.

“Many customers need to park for short time periods for errands at downtown stores,” he said.
