Subpoenas were served on eight of Mayor Marion Barry’s close friends Thursday as part of the investigation of alleged drug use by the mayor, law enforcement and city government sources said.

The action came as Barry reportedly left a Florida rehabilitation center to start a second phase of his treatment for alcoholism.

Barry, who had been a patient at the Hanley-Hazelden Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., since Jan. 21, moved to the Fenwick Hall treatment center off the coast of South Carolina, according to a statement issued by his spokeswoman, Lurma Rackley.

The eight friends subpoenaed include what one city government source called “late night traveling companions” of the mayor. A law enforcement source said those individuals will be asked whether they have ever used drugs with the mayor. Barry, 53, is scheduled to be arraigned in Washington on Wednesday on cocaine and perjury charges.
