From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

An 18-month-old girl drowned in a man-made pond Thursday after wandering outside an apartment in Fullerton, police said today.

Krystal Lynn Marquis apparently was playing unattended downstairs in the apartment of her mother’s fiance, Brian Nauenberg, in The Streams complex in the 1200 block of Deerpark Drive about 2 p.m., Sgt. Neal Baldwin said. Nauenberg, who was downstairs, thought Krystal was upstairs with her mother, Keary Lynn Sharp, 19, from Garden Grove, police said. When Nauenberg noticed the apartment was quiet, he realized the girl had wandered out the patio door. Police said Nauenberg ran outside and saw Krystal unconscious in about a foot of water in a pond that meanders through the apartment complex. Paramedics were called, but the child was pronounced dead at Placentia-Linda Community Hospital.
