Coronado’s Gavaldon Loses to Bollegraf in Semifinals

Coronado’s Angelica Gavaldon, a 16-year-old playing her first tournament as a professional, was beaten, 6-4, 7-5, by fifth-seeded Manon Bollegraf of the Netherlands Saturday in the semifinals of the Virginia Slims of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.

Bollegraf of The Netherlands trailed, 2-5, in the second set before taking charge.

“I was about to give it away in the second set,” she said. “I was not getting my shot deep enough and she was making me run so much, I was ready for a third set. But then I had a couple of good points and got my concentration back.”

In the other semifinal, third-seeded Amy Frazier dropped the first set before coming back to beat No. 1 Manuela Maleeva, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.

FOOTBALL

The Canadian Football League’s Calgary Stampeders selected Derek Sang, an offensive lineman from San Diego State, with the 27th pick overall. Sang, 6-5, 275 pounds, played high school football in Burnaby, Canada. A starter last year, Sang still has a year of eligibility remaining at SDSU.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego’s 72-56 victory over Gonzaga was USD’s 17th this season, a school record. USD finished at 17-10, 7-7 in the West Coast Conference. Christi English led USD with 14 points.

Cal Baptist made 29 of 34 free throws to beat visiting Point Loma Nazarene, 75-60, which was two for four from the free throw line. Shawndel Reddic had 14 for PLNC, which finished its season at 15-13, 4-6 in the Golden State Athletic Conference. California Baptist won the GSAC at 9-1, 20-9 overall.

BASEBALL

San Diego State improved to 9-2 with a 5-1 victory over visiting New Orleans (7-2). Jeff Barry and Mike Kerr each had bases-empty home runs for SDSU. Rick Navarro pitched five innings and gave up one run to improve to 5-0.

Reliever Tom Cheek won his third and fourth games of the year as San Diego took a doubleheader from San Francisco. Combined with a victory Friday night, USD won three consecutive games over USF, with Cheek getting all three victories. USD (7-6, 4-2) earned all three victories in its last at-bat. In the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Jim Alexander won it with a leadoff home run.

UC San Diego suffered its third loss in the SCC Tournament to College of Idaho, 5-3. J.J. Fisher (0-3) took the loss and has now lost more games than he did all last year when he went 7-2.

USIU lost its second in a row, 10-5, to visiting Cal State Fullerton. Fullerton’s Phil Nevin homered twice, and the Titans (8-5) scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Catcher Mike Murphy got two hits for USIU (3-8-1).

SOFTBALL

San Diego State lost both of its opening games in a nonconference doubleheader at Cal State Northridge, 2-0 and 3-0.

The University of San Diego opened its season by splitting a doubleheader with Christ College of Irvine. USD won the first game, 5-4, as Sara Berdan hit a three-run home run in the sixth. Christ College won the second, 8-2.

UC San Diego opened its season with a doubleheader loss to Cal Poly San Louis Obispo, 4-3 and 3-0. Cal Poly San Louis Obispo improved to 7-5.

USIU suffered a 3-0 loss to Fresno State in the Fresno State tournament to drop to 6-11, 0-2 in the tournament.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Point Loma Nazarene defeated Cal Baptist, 76-62, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma Nazarene. The Crusaders finished the season 8-21, 2-10 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist finished 9-20 and 2-10.

Tim Rapp was selected to the All-West Region Division III first team by the the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. Rapp, a 6-foot-4 junior guard, is averaging 23.1 points and 5.3 rebounds.

MEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State defeated Air Force, 8-1. SDSU improved to 7-3, 4-0 in conference play. Air Force fell to 5-2, 2-1.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

SDSU managed to take just one match from host Cal and lost, 8-1, to drop to 3-5 for the season. SDSU’s lone victory came in No. 3 doubles as Michelle Apra and Susan Hawke defeated Bonita Vista graduate Veena Prabhakar and her partner, 6-3, 6-0.

Point Loma Nazarene College swept Cal State San Bernardino, 9-0, as Kim Wright defeated Esther Caskey, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Point Loma Nazarene improved to 3-4. Cal State San Bernardino fell to 1-5.

USIU swept all six singles matches and took two of three doubles matches as the Gulls defeated visiting UC Santa Barbara, 8-1. Top singles winners were Giovanna Carotenuto, Diane Lowings and Carol Curmi. USIU improved to 6-6.

TRACK AND FIELD

The SDSU women’s team won both in dual meet and tri-meet scoring against Fresno State and UC Irvine at SDSU. SDSU defeated Irvine, 87-58, and Fresno State, 90-55, in the duals. SDSU’s Darla Vaughn was a four-event winner (100-meter hurdles, 100, 200 and 4 x 100 relay). The Aztec men were defeated by UCI and Fresno in dual competition and finished last in tri-meet scoring.

JUDO

Valerie Lafon, 16, has been selected to represent the United States at the Junior World Championships in Dijon France from March 30 to April 1. Lafon is the top-rated U.S. junior and senior in the 106-pound division.
