World IN BRIEF : BRITAIN : Poll Shows Thatcher Party Far Behind

Britain’s opposition Labor Party has a 17-point lead over the ruling Conservatives, its highest ranking in Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s decade in power, a poll found. Thatcher’s political fortunes have been declining amid economic stagnation and Britain’s isolated stance in international forums on issues such as South Africa and European union. The survey gave Labor 51%, the Conservatives 34%, the centrist Liberal Democrats 5% and other parties 10%.
