From Times staff and Wire reports

Protesters shouting anti-government and anti-U.S. slogans tried to stone a U.S. diplomat’s residence in Kwangju and clashed with police in four other cities. Police fired tear gas to break up the protests by students and dissidents in Kwangju, Inchon, Taegu, Pusan and Taejon. About 50 students chanting “Yankee go home!” were stopped near the residence of Carlton Ames, director of the U.S. Cultural Center in Kwangju. Anti-U.S. sentiment in Kwangju is strong because some believe Washington condoned a military crackdown on a pro-democracy movement in the city in 1980.
