The Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record quoted unidentified sources as saying a State Bureau of Investigation inquiry into alleged point-shaving by North Carolina State centers on a game played Dec. 27, 1986, that the then 12th-ranked Wolfpack lost, 67-62, to Tampa, an NCAA Division II school. N.C. State was 7-1 at the time.

Bill Dowdy, chief investigator for the SBI, would say only that a former Wolfpack player was the focus of the inquiry.

The News & Record also reported that former East Carolina basketball coach Larry Gillman was one of two men who gave former Wolfpack player Charles Shackleford money while he was a student. Another newspaper, The News and Observer of Raleigh, N.C., identified Robert D. Kramer, a North Carolina native who lives in East Orange, N.J., as the other person who loaned money to Shackleford.
