New Theme: Leona Helmsley, recently convicted of tax fraud, is abdicating her reign in advertising as hotel queen. A new advertising campaign in April for the New York Helmsley hotels will “sell the impeccable service that the hotel group delivers to each of its guests,” Leo Greenland, chairman of the Smith-Greenland Inc. agency, said.

* Actor’s Support: Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman has made a six-figure donation and has taken a lead role in a plea for Allison Atlas, who was told in August she had three to six months to live unless a bone marrow transplant checked her leukemia. Atlas is a 20-year-old business major at New York University and lives in Bethesda, Md. Hoffman’s publicist confirmed the actor has donated more than $100,000, in addition to agreeing to pick up the vacation tab for the donor who matches Atlas.

* Calling It Quits: Father Bruce Ritter, who resigned Tuesday from Covenant House after earlier taking a temporary leave, said continuing allegations about sexual and financial improprieties made it impossible for him to continue. While strenuously denying any wrongdoing, the charismatic Catholic priest said his resignation was the best way he could save the organization that he started 22 years ago to provide shelters--including one in Los Angeles--for runaway teen-agers. Manhattan Dist. Atty. Robert Morgenthau said Wednesday that, after a three-month investigation, no charges will be filed against Ritter, although church officials will continue their investigation.
