Santa Monica : ‘American Agenda’ Series
Gangs, civil rights and the environment are topics of a series of slide shows, panel discussions and music presentations at Santa Monica College starting next week.
The college is presenting the “American Agenda” program, which examines issues of the 1990s, as part of its 60th anniversary observance.
On Tuesday, George McKenna, superintendent of the Inglewood Unified School District, will be a member of a panel that also will include gang members and representatives of the Santa Monica Police and of community youth groups. They will discuss “youth at risk.”
On Wednesday, the Santa Monica Police Department will present a slide show about gangs in the city.
Mural artist Judith Francisca Baca will give a slide presentation-lecture Thursday about art as a productive outlet and an activity for youths.
Highlighting civil rights and human rights will be a performance of black South African songs on March 13, and a presentation of Andean and Latin American dance and music on March 15. The shows are billed as “entertainment with a political message.”
