Two Crossroads School students will be competing for a scholarship and trophy next week in the Music Center’s second annual Spotlight Awards.
Michelle Kim and Anders Martinson, students of the Santa Monica school, along with Wendy Chen of South Pasadena, are finalists in the instrumental music category of the competition. Martinson, a pianist, will play a Chopin opus and Kim, a violinist, will perform a piece by Henri Wieniawski in the finals Monday.
Eight other young artists are competing in vocal music, dance and drama categories. A panel of judges that includes Walter Mirisch, Ernest Fleischmann, Gerald Arpino and Bella Lewitzky will choose a total of five winners, who will each get a $5,000 cash scholarship from the Music Center.
The competition is the culmination of a process that began last October, with 387 people from throughout Southern California applying.
