Former UC Irvine Chancellor Daniel G. Aldrich Jr., 71, will be released soon from the university’s medical center, where he was admitted last week for treatment of cancer of the colon, according to hospital authorities.

The cancer was diagnosed nearly three years ago, a UCI Medical Center spokeswoman said, who added that Aldrich has been receiving chemotherapy for about 2 1/2 years and was hospitalized when it was thought that his condition was worsening.

“He’s doing well, he’s in good condition and he should be discharged within a few days,” the spokeswoman said.
