Woman Honored for Making a Difference in Tustin

Tustin businesswoman Margaret Pottenger, the first female director of the Tustin Chamber of Commerce and the first Tustin Woman of the Year, has been named 1990 Woman of Distinction by the Tustin branch of the American Assn. of University Women.

In addition to her other activities, she has spent one day a week for the past 30 years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Assn. and has been president of the Orange County Lung Assn.

The association said the award is presented to a Tustin woman who has made a lasting difference in her community. Pottenger will be honored at a fund-raising public tea March 10 at the Santa Ana home of Kathy Greenwood.

Superior Court Judge Manuel A. Ramirez and Municipal Court Judge James M. Brooks were named Judges of the Year by the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Orange County.

The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce named Joan Berlin, Mary Castle, Mary Hibbard, Arlene Taormina Ready and Sammy Stenger as 1989 Annie Anaheim Accolade recipients

The awards are given by the chamber’s women’s division to recognize women who have shown outstanding volunteer service, accomplishments and results in Anaheim.

They were honored at the group’s recent 24th annual awards banquet.

Susanna Lee, a senior at Sonora High School in La Habra, and Franky Rolleg, a single mother of two who is attempting to improve her status by becoming a registered nurse, were the main honorees of the recent Soroptimist International of La Habra awards luncheon.

Lee, who won the Citizenship Award and $250, plans to study political science in college and hopes to become a journalist.

Rolleg, who won the club’s Training Award and $500, has two children, ages 12 and 4, and attends the Cypress College nursing program.

Richard R. Schmid of Williamson & Schmid, an Irvine civil engineering and land surveying firm, has been named Engineer of the Year by the Orange County branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers,

Schmid, a resident of Santa Ana, was honored at an awards luncheon at the Revere House in Tustin for his professional achievements and nontechnical accomplishments.

Schmid is a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the United Way and the Chapman College Athletic Foundation.

Corona del Mar model Tanya Newbould was presented a $1,000 cosmetic gift certificate for winning the “Prettiest Eyes” contest sponsored by Cano’s Seafoods of Mexico restaurant in Newport Beach. The nine runners-up each received $100.

Joan Chang, 15, of Placentia was crowned 1990 Orange County Miss T.E.E.N over 32 other contestants. She will compete for the California crown in July in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jim Everett has been named Sportsman of the Year by CHOC Padrinos, a support group of Childrens Hospital of Orange County.

For his “exemplary work with students and dedication to education,” Allen G. Brown, dean of biological sciences at Fullerton College, was presented an Outstanding Contributions to Education Award by the Orange County Board of Education. He lives in Laguna Beach.
