Three suspected auto thieves in Pasadena paid the price early Sunday when their victim turned out to be an off-duty police officer who shot one of them in the neck, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Officer Derwin Henderson, 25, was stopped at a red light at about 2 a.m. when three men approached, police said.

One of the suspects, Jalal Soumi, 19, allegedly simulated a gun under his clothing and threatened to shoot Henderson and his two passengers if they did not get out of the car, Los Angeles Police Officer Richard Dulgerian said. When they left the car, Soumi and two companions, Issa Faggouseh, 20, and Miguel Jurado, 18, got in and ordered Henderson to run, police said.

“Fearing that the suspect was going to shoot him,” Henderson drew a .38-caliber revolver and fired five rounds at the car, Dulgerian said. Henderson then hailed a Pasadena police officer.

Police stopped the car about half a mile away.

Jurado, who was wounded in the neck, was in critical condition at Huntington Memorial Hospital.
