They’ve dubbed it the “Big Chill” of comics. NBC announced today that it is producing a live-action movie based on the grown-up adventures of comic book hero Archie Andrews and his high school pals from Riverdale.
According to an NBC spokeswoman, it’s the first movie based on the 49-year-old comic strip about Archie and his pals--Veronica, Betty, Jughead and Reggie.
The movie, tentatively titled “Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again,” will fast-forward them to 1990. The characters, now in their 30s, return to Riverdale for a high school reunion. But a lot has changed. Jughead must deal with problems of single parenthood; Reggie’s ambitions threaten to destroy what he once held dear, and while Archie still can’t decide between Betty and Veronica, he has a third woman complicating matters.
Casting will be announced shortly, and NBC says the movie will air this fall.
