A 44-year-old man found stabbed to death outside a Tijuana bar has been identified as Peter Mark Stegmayer of San Francisco, a Naval Investigative Services agent said Monday.

Stegmayer’s body was discovered Feb. 19, with no identification. Mexican authorities contacted San Diego officials because they believed the victim was a U.S. citizen. They also speculated, from his clothing, that he was in the military.

However, Stegmayer worked at the federal Department of Health and Human Services as a public health officer. “They wear a uniform that looks very much like the Navy,” said Harry Stovall, a special agent with Naval Investigative Services.

Stegmayer had apparently gotten into an argument at a bar and was asked to leave. His body was found outside, his wallet missing. Using dental charts, investigators identified Stegmayer, who had been reported as missing, Stovall said.

No one has been arrested in the slaying.
