A private contractor on Monday began preparations for removing up to 7,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil from the Chatham Brothers toxic waste site, where a petroleum recycling business operated for 40 years.

Removal of the tainted soil is expected to begin next week and be completed by the end of April, said Allan Hirsch, spokesman for the toxics division of the state Department of Health Services.

Excavation up to 14 feet deep will occur in the most heavily contaminated area, which measures about 150 feet by 200 feet, Hirsch said. The contractor, O.H. Materials Corp., will replace the contaminated material with fresh soil.
