Two people died and five others--including three children--were critically injured Monday night when a car rammed the back of a gasoline or oil tanker truck on the Golden State Freeway in Sun Valley, authorities reported.
The identities of the two who died were unavailable late Monday. Two children were taken to Children’s Hospital. The other child and the two adults were taken to Pacifica Hospital, all in critical condition.
The car was “wedged under the truck” and passengers were trapped inside following the 9:45 p.m. collision in the northbound lanes near Wicks Road, said Kathy Shorten of the California Highway Patrol.
Shorten said early reports indicated the tanker was leaking either gasoline or diesel fuel.
Five engine companies, five ambulances and a rescue helicopter were dispatched to the scene, said Jim Wells, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman.
