SHORT TAKES : U.S.-Soviet Orchestra Sets Tour

The American Soviet Youth Orchestra, made up of 100 student musicians from both countries, will make its second tour of the United States and the Soviet Union this summer with concerts also planned in Western Europe.

The orchestra, a joint venture of the Oberlin College music conservatory in Ohio and the Moscow State Conservatory, will give 24 concerts in 17 cities in the Soviet Union, Europe and the United States in July and August.

The conductors will be Leonard Slatkin, music director of the St. Louis Symphony, and Alexander Lazarev, artistic director of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra in Moscow. Violinist Joshua Bell will accompany the tour as American soloist.

The orchestra, which made its first tour in 1988, is composed of 50 American and 50 Soviet music students who are selected after rigorous competitions in both countries.
