COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Four Titan Errors Pave the Way for UCLA’s Victory

UCLA took advantage of four Cal State Fullerton errors to score five unearned runs and the Bruins went on to a 12-4 victory in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday in Westwood.

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Huck Flener (3-1) took the loss. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, five of which were unearned.

With the score tied, 4-4, and two outs in the sixth, an error by Fullerton third baseman Phil Nevin loaded the bases for UCLA. Dave Zancanaro then tripled to give the Bruins a 7-4 lead.

UCLA added another run in the inning and four more in seventh to take a 12-4 lead.

Zancanaro, who started the game in right field and had five RBIs, also pitched the last three innings to get the victory. He allowed no hits and had three strikeouts and improved to 3-1.

In other nonconference baseball:

Chapman 6, Wyoming 3--Jason Rolish had a hit, scored two runs, and had an RBI to lead Chapman at Hart Park in Orange. James Werriweather had a hit and two RBIs, and Doug Yates had a hit, scored run and had an RBI for Chapman (9-9). Ken Hokuf (1-0) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the victory.

Southern California College 13, Biola 3--Sean Maharg had a three-run double, and Don Harrell had two doubles and an RBI for host Southern California (8-7-1). Larry Jacinto (1-1) allowed two runs and three hits over the first six innings for the victory.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 1, San Diego State 0 (13 innings)--Ann Van Dortrecht allowed five hits and had seven strikeouts over 13 innings to earn the victory for visiting Fullerton. The Titans scored their run on a balk in the 13th.

In the Cal State Sacramento golf invitational:

UC Irvine shot 914 and finished second to Cal State Northridge, which had 910. Irvine’s Scott McGihon shot 224 in 54 holes for Irvine and finished in the four-way tie for second at the Rancho Murrieta Country Club. Thomas Ljung of the University of the Pacific was the medalist, shooting 218.
