* Write Him In: There are people who think Tom Clancy ought to run for Congress. But the 42-year-old author of “The Hunt for Red October” said Sunday he did not want to comment on published reports that he was being urged by influential Republicans to run against incumbent Maryland Democrat Roy P. Dyson. Maryland resident Clancy has often expressed interest in public service but is reportedly not ready to make a decision.

* Latest News: The prototype of the Washington Reporter, which may become the capital’s newest daily newspaper, will be in the hands of power brokers next week, founder Roger Kranz said Monday. The prototype is filled with familiar bylines, such as former State Department spokesman Hodding Carter III and syndicated columnist Jules Witcover. Kranz hopes the prototype reaches politicians, journalists, lawyers and lobbyists.

* Fact and Fiction: Rep. Robert Dornan (R-Garden Grove) has challenged the accuracy of “Born on the Fourth of July,” the hit movie about Vietnam veteran and prospective election opponent Ron Kovic. “The movie is, in effect, his political resume. And Kovic has engaged in resume padding,” Dornan said recently. Kovic is shown accidentally killing a fellow Marine, and later visiting the Marine’s parents. Kovic has said the family visit was only a recurring nightmare that he had. “It’s an entertainment vehicle, not a documentary,” said a Kovic spokesman.

* Open List: “We believe it is important to recognize the work of those who contribute to Irish issues, even those who are not Irish,” Irish America magazine editor Sean O’Murchu said. Thus, the publication named New York Mayor David Dinkins to its list of top Irish-Americans in its latest issue. Dinkins was named for his work on behalf of illegal Irish immigrants. Others include CBS News President David Burke, talk-show host Phil Donahue and Speaker of the House Thomas Foley.
