City Council Approves Ethics-Pay Raise Measure
In an unusually tame session, the Los Angeles City Council gave approval Wednesday to the ethics-and-pay-raise ballot measure that has been the subject of boisterous council debate for months. A series of near-unanimous votes followed almost no discussion on the matter Wednesday.
The measure includes proposals for public financing of political campaigns, bans on outside work and honorariums for elected officials, limitations on gifts and a one-year ban on lobbying after they leave office. A proposal for a $24,635 council pay raise also will be included in the all-or-nothing ballot measure.
The council hopes to get the measure on the June 5 ballot, but a dispute with the county over the city’s share of the ballot cost has left the matter up in the air. A meeting of city and county officials on the matter is scheduled today.
