JERUSALEM — Israeli police using rubber bullets shot and wounded four Palestinian women and a 12-year-old girl today during the first Arab demonstration in East Jerusalem since a U.S.-Israeli dispute over its status.
East Jerusalem’s Makassed Hospital said the women and the girl were shot in the face and head. Three women suffered tear gas inhalation.
Witnesses said police broke up the march in the walled Old City by Arab women marking International Women’s Day and then clashed with stone throwers near Damascus Gate, main entrance to the Muslim Quarter.
They said police felled a 22-year-old man with a blow from a rifle butt to the head. Police denied this, saying he fell and hurt himself.
The Old City is in East Jerusalem, annexed by Israel despite Arab opposition after its capture with the rest of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in the 1967 Middle East war.
President Bush last weekend publicly opposed new Israeli settlement in annexed areas, provoking anger from Israelis who see the city as the Jewish state’s eternal capital.
