A former Lawndale maintenance supervisor pleaded no contest to four felony charges of allegedly billing the city for building supplies he used for private remodeling projects.

Floyd (Bud) Marez, 49, pleaded no contest at Los Angeles Superior Court last week to one count of embezzlement of city money, one count of embezzlement of city property and two counts of grand theft, according to Deputy Dist. Atty. Herb Lapin.

Marez, who is alleged to have been the head of a fraudulent home remodeling business using city workers and materials, could face a maximum of eight years in prison, Lapin said. Sentencing before a Superior Court judge is set for March 30, he said.

The alleged crimes took place between April, 1987, and August, 1988, Lapin said. Marez worked for the city from November, 1981, to August, 1988, when he was fired for his alleged involvement in the remodeling scheme.
