State to Probe Charges of Racism at Schools

Share

The state Department of Education will send a representative to the Centinela Valley Union High School District today to look into allegations of racism raised during two mass student walkouts earlier this week.

State Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig said in a letter to Supt. McKinley Nash that his department will work with the Office of Civil Rights and the Department of Fair Employment and Housing in looking into complaints raised by administrators and teachers in the South Bay district and community members.

Meanwhile, student protesters claimed victory Thursday and temporarily called off future demonstrations at Hawthorne and Leuzinger high schools. The students said that at meetings with school board members Thursday, they were assured that the district is committed to ending racism.
