From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A gambling ring that placed illegal video slot machines in Vietnamese neighborhoods in Orange and Los Angeles counties was planning to expand its operations into Vietnamese neighborhoods in San Jose, police said. Records seized in a police raid indicate that the ring had identified about 15 Vietnamese-owned video stores, billiard halls and cafes in San Jose, Los Angeles and Westminster, police investigators said. A phony mail drop and answering service had also been set up, but the ringleaders were arrested before the machines could be installed. Other documents seized show that the ring, which grossed $400,000 last month alone, had sent $231,000 in profits back to New York since November, police said.
