East Germany, Israel Discuss Diplomatic Ties

COPENHAGEN —
East Germany and Israel began talks on establishing diplomatic ties Thursday, even though East Germany may no longer exist by the time it recognizes the Jewish state.
But an East German diplomat said it is important to straighten out relations with Israel. “It’s a question that must be solved, and why shouldn’t we try to solve it?” he asked. “We can’t stop all activities and wait for unification.”
