Shriver Kicks Chair, Breaks Toe in Loss; Capriati Wins Again

Second-seeded Monica Seles, sixth-seeded Hana Mandlikova and seventh-seeded Pam Shriver were upset Thursday in the third round of the Virginia Slims of Florida.

Shriver got so angry during her 7-5, 6-1 loss to Dinky van Rensburg that she kicked a chair and broke her right toe. The injury will put her out of action for three to six weeks.

Jennifer Capriati, the 13-year-old sensation who is playing her first professional tournament, beat eighth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-4, 6-2. Tauziat is the world’s 16th-ranked player.

Tenth-seeded Laura Gildemeister beat Seles, 6-1, 7-5, and Amanda Coetzer of South Africa defeated Mandlikova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Three other seeded players managed to advance to the fourth round.

Third-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez beat 12th-seeded Judith Wiesner of Austria, 6-4, 6-1, fourth-seeded Helena Sukova rallied to defeat Halle Cioffi, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Jana Novotna routed Angelica Gavaldon, 6-1, 6-0.

Capriati wore down Tauziat with strong backhands and serves that reached 92 m.p.h. She will meet Sukova today.
