Digital Announces Severance Plans: Maynard, Mass.-based Digital Equipment Corp., hit with the double whammy of a slumping computer industry and a weak New England economy, said it would soon offer a generous voluntary severance package to between 5,000 and 8,000 employees and may further consolidate its plants. Digital has a total of 125,900 employees. “Everything is being looked at,” said Brad Allen, a company spokesman, adding that the reductions and any plant closings will be “concentrated only in the U.S.”
