Everett Lee Jones; ‘Bonehead English’ Director at UCLA
Everett Lee Jones, for 35 years and through millions of words, the director of freshman composition or “bonehead English” at UCLA, died Feb. 25 while on vacation in Mendocino.
Jones was 74 and suffered a heart attack, a family spokesman said. He had been living in Pasadena since retiring from UCLA in 1982.
“Subject A English,” which he taught for those many years, was a class all UC undergraduates must conquer before they can graduate from any branch of the UC system.
In addition to his teaching chores, Jones was the author or editor of several books, among them “An Approach to College Reading,” “The Harbrace College Reader,” “The Negro Cowboys” and “The Adventures of the Negro Cowboys.”
A widower, Jones is survived by a son and daughter and three grandchildren.
