The Winnipeg Jets, already assured of a playoff spot, have set their sights on second place in the Smythe Division.

They spotted the second place Edmonton Oilers a 4-0 lead in the first period at Winnipeg, then charged back to win, 7-5. The victory put the Jets four points behind the Oilers, who have played one more game than the Jets.

Paul Fenton and backup goaltender Stephane Beauregard led the comeback.

Fenton had two goals and an assist, while Beauregard took over in the second period and stopped 10 of the 11 shots he faced in the last 40 minutes.

Mark Messier scored twice as the Oilers scored on four of their eight shots against starting goalie Bob Essensa. Messier has 41 goals.

Fenton’s 26th goal, 36 seconds into the second period, started the Jets’ rally. They took the lead, 5-4, before the period ended.

Messier’s second goal put the Oilers one goal behind with 2:40 left. But, 38 seconds later, Thomas Steen scored to put the game out of reach.

Washington 4, Quebec 3--Dino Ciccarelli scored halfway through the third period at Landover, Md., to make Mike Liut’s debut as a goalie for the Capitals a success.

Liut, acquired from Hartford Monday, stopped 21 shots. The Capitals, who are hoping Liut will lead them into the playoffs, moved into fourth place in the Patrick Division. The top four teams in each division qualify for postseason play.

Calgary 4, Vancouver 4--The Canucks rallied from a two-goal deficit to get a tie at Vancouver and move within 10 points of the Kings in a drive to reach the playoffs.
