Dozens of cars and trucks on a downtown freeway bridge collided in a chain reaction and burned Monday in fog so thick it cut visibility to zero. Three people were killed and 30 injured, authorities said.

“It was just horrible, terrible. To hear the brakes squeal, the gas tanks explode, to hear the people screaming,” said Harry Suppanz, 35, of Sturgeon Bay, a passenger in a truck that crashed and burned.

Authorities said 52 vehicles were involved in the accident on the northbound lanes of Interstate 43 over the Fox River. A number of the injured had to be extricated with mechanical equipment from a line of smashed vehicles that stretched 450 feet.
